William Lyons (later Sir William) had not taken a backwards step since joining William Walmsley in founding The Swallow Sidecar Co. in Blackpool, England, in 1922. He progressed quickly from sidecar manufacture to bespoke coachbuilding for car manufacturers such as Austin, Morris, Fiat, Swift, Wolseley and Standard cars, ultimately creating SS as a marque in its own right. The hugely gifted Lyons was a rare combination of business acumen, brilliant design flair, and a visionary awareness of what the market wanted and needed.

The SS marque was launched late in 1931 with the 2-litre SSI and 1-litre SSII models, both side valve-engined cars with outstandingly stylish coachwork, whether in coupé or tourer form. The new 1½-litre 'Jaguar' – the first time the 'Jaguar' name had been adopted by SS – was introduced in September 1935. In saloon form it retailed at £285, boasted a top speed of 75mph and fuel economy of 28mpg. To say the model gave the company a boost would be an understatement as, in no time at all, the order books were bulging and it wasn't until they abandoned their time-consuming, ash frame method of construction in favour of the all-steel shell, did they even begin to catch up with demand.

The styling was distinctive and so enduringly influential that it could clearly be evidenced in models built long after World War II.

This rare RHD pre-war Jaguar SS 1½ Saloon comes with a Monegasque title and documentation. As an older restoration, the car is said to start, run and drive but there are some minor cosmetic defaults to contend with. Black over Silver with a beige leather interior, the car is equipped with a sliding sun-roof, opening windshield, long range headlights, and a partially complete original toolkit.

The car is registered in Monaco under chassis number 89047 – corresponding to the new chassis plate fitted in the engine bay – body numbered B9047 – chassis stamped 411293 (chassis from pre-war SS were originally not stamped).
