This 'standard steel' Mark VI was originally ordered from Jack Barclay for one J W S Uttley, with delivery scheduled for 16th January 1952. However, the aforesaid Uttley never took delivery, presumably because the order had been cancelled. Eventually the Bentley was sold by P J Evans in Birmingham to its first owner, Henry Garlick, on 8th May 1952 and registered as 'MAC 651'. The purchase price was £5,009 at a time when the average UK house price was £1,891! Austin Garlick, the first owner's son, inherited the Bentley in 1961. In 1969 'MAC 651' was sold to a new owner in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. When this owner died in 2001 the car passed to his son, who then sold it on.
The next owner proceeded to carry out complete restoration, including some significant upgrades. These included installing the 4.9-litre engine from a Bentley S-Series; a late-model R-Type Continental differential; and electric power steering, making the car both faster and easier to drive: a veritable 'wolf in sheep's clothing'. There is an extensive photographic record of the restoration on file together with a substantial quantity of associated paperwork and invoices from various specialists, testifying to the fact that this was a true 'no-expense-spared' project. Indeed, 'MAC 651' was rewarded with the Patina Class trophy at the Bentley Drivers Club Concours d'Elegance in 2017 (with the car). Additional documentation includes the original logbook; Bentley Drivers' Club reviews from 2007 and 2014; various tax discs; and a current V5C. The car has had a new set of tyres and battery fitted this year.
