If ever there was an equivalence formula between such a mouth-wateringly highly-specified, performance-capable hypercar such as this and its driver owner, then Lot 22P now offered here would surely be supremely well matched to its 800-plus horsepower, 200mph, double-Formula 1 World Champion owner, the great Fernando Alonso.
The McLaren Elva is a limited-production model inspired by the legendary heritage of the then-infant McLaren marque in 1964-65. The admirable, much-loved and immensely-respected Le Mans 24-Hours and double-CanAm Championship-winning driver/engineer Bruce McLaren had produced his little team's first sports car design in 1964, now 59 years ago.
Would-be customers flocked to the little independent team's door wanting to buy similar cars to race in 1965, but McLaren had no production capacity. To meet such clamouring demand, Bruce struck a deal with the long-established Elva Cars concern to manufacture customer-market sports-racing cars to his team's design.
To celebrate that landmark development, today's McLaren company launched its truly startling modern McLaren Elva, as exemplified by this unique, headline hypercar we now have the privilege of offering here from Fernando Alonso's personal collection.
It represents the latest member of the modern marque's exclusive Ultimate Series, which includes such sensational models as the McLaren P1 and the Speedtail. McLaren announced that the Elva model's production would be limited to 399, of which this example is 114 of 149 produced in 2022. Buyers were invited to customise each one through the company's MSO Division.
The McLaren Elva's eye-catchingly unconventional form is focused upon its open cockpit low-line design without a conventional windscreen. Driver and passenger protection is instead provided by an ingenious aerodynamic feature, wind-tunnel developed and proven to divert the airstream high above the occupants' heads.
Motive power is provided by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine, delivering upon driver demand no less than 804 horsepower plus the stupendous torque figure of 590 lbs/ft.
Transmission to the rear wheels is via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, this entirely jaw-dropping McLaren Elva being capable of accelerating from 0-62 mph in fewer than three seconds, 0-100mph in 4.9secs and 0-124mph in just 6.7 - quicker than its sister, track-focused, McLaren Senna.
The fact that the Elva as offered here is McLaren's most lightweight modern-regulation road car does not detract from its detail finish. The McLaren Elva's elimination of a conventional windshield provides what the manufacturer describes as "...the purest driving experience possible".
Stylistically, without windscreen interruption the Elva's exterior and interior are seamlessly merged. Its exterior body surface extends into the upper dashboard and door panelling. Visually, driver attention is drawn to a minimalist central infotainment screen, while the flat-bottomed steering wheel is free of complex button controls, the fully digital-gauge cluster binnacle being mounted upon the steering column sleeve, the entire assembly moving together. A series of climate-control vents located below the beltline, maximise hot and cold air flow. And as the American magazine
'Car & Driver' reports "..the Elva's neatest trick uses natural airflow and a front-mounted deflector to direct air up and over the cockpit. McLaren calls it Active Air Management, and the system automatically adjusts based on how fast the car is traveling. The company will also offer a fixed windshield to comply with certain state laws".
Quoted McLaren Elva price as launched was US $1,695,000. Yet in collectability terms this individual car's momentous Fernando Alonso-specification status and personal ownership should also be considered. Most significantly, he will be present at the Sale and will personally hand over the keys to the successful buyer.
Fernando Alonso, the now 42-year-old Spanish superstar driver's startling competitive longevity is self-evident as his seven podium-place (top three) finishes (up to the Qatar GP) in this current 2023 Formula 1 World Championship series plainly attest, driving his Aramco Cognizant team Aston Martin-Mercedes AMR23.
He holds the record for the most Formula 1 World Championship race starts ever made by any driver (no fewer than 371 up to the 2023 Qatar GP) while his Formula 1 racing career overall now extends back no fewer than 18 years to his 2001 debut with the Italian Minardi team. He has since starred in Renault (2003-6 and 2008-9), McLaren (2007 and 2015-18), and Ferrari cars (2010-14), before a sabbatical 2019-20 then his startling Formula 1 comeback with Alpine in 2021-22; before joining Aston Martin this year - and instantly bouncing back into top-three podium prominence.
His simply prodigious driving talents made him (at the time) the youngest-ever Formula 1 World Champion, aged just 24, in 2005, before he achieved his second consecutive F1 World title in 2006. Jump forward to the Singapore Grand Prix of this year where Fernando became the first Formula 1 driver to complete a monumental 100,000kms of Grand Prix racing!
Overall Fernando Alonso's Formula 1 racing record at the time of writing features 32 wins, 22 pole positions and 97 podium places (and rising...).
During his sabbatical years this entirely remarkable true-blue racer satisfied his interest in experiencing other forms of the sport by winning the Le Mans 24-Hours sports car endurance classic - not just once, but twice in succession - 2018-2019, plus the Spa 6-Hours, Fuji 6-Hours Sebring 1,000-miles, all for Toyota. Along the way he added a further victory, this time in America's Daytona 24-Hours driving for Cadillac. And he also clinched yet another World Champion's title, this time as LMP1 title holder, in parallel with his Toyota-team co-drivers Sébastian Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima.
And still there's even more; Alonso attacking the renowned Indianapolis 500-Miles speedway classic in both 2017 and 2020, driving a McLaren-entered Dallara and leading the world's richest individual race no fewer than four times.
In 2020 this most astonishing of modern topline racing superstars even contested the punishing Paris-Dakar off-road rally, driving a Toyota Hilux - his impressive performance unfortunately punctuated by not just one crash, but two, yet still he reached the finish line.
So, just add this 2022 McLaren Elva's unique specification - with only 4kms "on the clock", note - and provenance to the towering record of its simply remarkable, connoisseurial, superstar double-World Champion/double Le Mans-winning owner.
