Originally an up-market Chrysler, Imperial was registered as a marque in its own right in 1954, a move which enabled the corporation to develop a separate identity for the cars. The Imperial Crown was Chrysler's top-of-the-range and most exclusive model. A direct competitor to Cadillac, it was manufactured in relatively limited numbers. In the immediate post-war years though, the conservatively styled Imperials looked little different from mainstream Chryslers. The latter were virtually identical to those of 1942, and not until 1949 did a new look appear, based on that of the Chrysler New Yorker.
The Imperial Crown offered here dates from 1964, by which time the range had undergone several makeovers and countless improvements to its specification. Newly restyled for '64 by Chrysler's head stylist Elwood Engel, lately recruited from Ford, the Crown was made in three different body styles: two- and four-door hardtop six-seaters and a two-door six-seater convertible, all powered by a 413.2ci (6.8-litre) V8 engine producing 340bhp. Priced at $5,581, the four-door sedan was by far the most popular, accounting for slightly more than two thirds of the 20,000-or-so cars produced that year.
The Imperial Crown four-door sedan offered here was purchased by the vendor from Gesswein Motors of Milbank, South Dakota in October 2010. A copy of the bill of sale is on file and the car also comes with a South Dakota Certificate of Title.
This Imperial has been on static display for a number of years and as such will require recommissioning prior to road use. Please also note this Lot is subject to UK import tax at the reduced rate of 5% if it is to remain in the UK.
