Au cours de sa brève existence, la marque française Facel Véga a produit environ 2 900 voitures, toutes particulièrement élégantes, luxueuses et rapides. Au sommet de la gamme, on trouvait l'Excellence, une berline de luxe prestigieuse, très performances et extrêmement onéreuse qui coûtait près de 4 000 000 de francs, soit l'équivalent de presque quatre Citroën DS. Seul modèle quatre portes de Facel-Véga, l'Excellence était construite sur le châssis allongé du coupé et recevait une carrosserie longue et basse, sans pilier central, avec des « porte-suicide » à l'arrière (ouvrant à contre-sens). Après les dix premiers modèles équipés du légendaire moteur V8 à haute performance Chrysler Hemi de 6.4 litres, les versions suivantes reçurent le bloc à culasse en coin, la production du Hemi ayant été arrêtée. On pouvait choisir entre la boîte manuelle Pont-à-Mousson à quatre rapports ou la Chrysler Torqueflite automatique et, au fil des évolutions, on pouvait choisir les options direction et freins assistés, air conditionné et vitres électriques pour son Excellence. Le magnifique intérieur tendu de cuir était toujours luxueusement aménagé et proposait même une trousse de maquillage logée au dos de l'accoudoir central arrière. Avec ses 360 ch disponibles, l'Excellence première série était la plus rapide des trois séries produites, malgré les puissances égales ou supérieures revendiquées par les deux suivantes. La production de l'Excellence prit fin en 1964, après seulement 156 exemplaires de cette magnifique voiture, la majorité appartenant à la deuxième série.

Cette très rare Facel-Véga Excellence de la première série est rendue encore plus attractive par son association avec la star Ava Gardner, sa première propriétaire, qui en prit livraison directement à l'usine. Dernière des dix produites, elle fut livrée en septembre 1958, alors qu'Ava Gardner s'apprêtait à tourner le film On the Beach avec Gregory Peck comme partenaire. Elle avait signé un contrat avec la MGM en 1941 et devait figurer dans de nombreux films de premier ordre des années 1950 aux années 1970, incluant Mogambo (1953), pour lequel elle fut nominée aux Academy Awards comme meilleure actrice. La propriété d'Ava Gardner est confirmée par le registre des châssis (copie au dossier) et une photographie d'elle avec la voiture figure également dans le dossier historique.

Restaurée il y a 10-15 ans, l'Excellence est décrite comme étant en bon état général, roulant et fonctionnant bien, avec un intérieur en cuir rouge à la jolie patine. La voiture est vendue avec ses papiers d'immatriculation hollandaise.

In its relatively short life, the French firm of Facel Véga produced approximately 2,900 cars, all of which were stylish, luxurious and fast. At the very pinnacle of these was the Excellence, a glamorous, high-performance and extremely expensive luxury saloon that cost almost 4,000,000 francs, or roughly as much as four Citroën DS saloons. Facel Véga's only four-door model, the Excellence was based on a lengthened FV coupé chassis and featured striking, low-slung, pillar-less coachwork, the rear 'suicide' doors being hinged at the rear. After the first ten cars had been completed with Chrysler's legendary high-performance 6.4-litre 'Hemi' V8 engine, the succeeding versions were equipped with the 'Wedge' unit, production of the 'Hemi' having ceased. There was a choice of either the Pont-à-Mousson four-speed manual gearbox or Chrysler Torqueflite automatic transmission, and as time progressed the Excellence could be ordered with options such as power-assisted steering, power brakes, air conditioning and electric windows. The beautiful leather-trimmed interior was always lavishly appointed and featured a vanity kit housed in a compartment at the back of the centre armrest. With a maximum of 360 horsepower on tap, the '1st Series' Excellence was arguably the fastest of the three series produced, notwithstanding the equal or higher outputs claimed for its successors. Production of the Excellence ceased in June 1964 after only 156 of these magnificent automobiles had been made, by far the greater majority belonging to the '2nd Series'.

This ultra-rare Facel Véga Excellence '1st Series' is made all the more desirable by virtue of its association with film star Ava Gardner, it first owner, who took delivery directly from the factory. The last of the ten built, it was delivered in September 1958 when Ava would have been about to start work on the movie, 'On the Beach', co-starring with Gregory Peck. She had been signed by MGM Studios in 1941 and would appear in numerous high-profile movies from the 1950s to the 1970s, including 'Mogambo' (1953) for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. Ava Gardner's ownership is confirmed by the chassis records (copy on file) and there is also a photograph of her with this car in the history file.

Restored some 10-15 years ago, the Excellence is described as in generally good condition, running and driving well, and with a lovely, patinated, red leather interior. The car is offered with Netherlands registration papers.
