LOT 220
A superb Gerald Wingrove 1:15 scale model of the 1932 Weinberger bodied Type 41 Bugatti Royale,
Lot - 220 is the work of Gerald A. Wingrove MBE - model engineer, and represents the end of a very successful career spanning 40 years creating miniatures for private collectors around the world. The subject is the 1932 Weinberger Bugatti Royale and is signed Gerald A. Wingrove MBE, indication that it was built between 2000 and 2003, when he retired from accepting further commissions. This model is unique among the eight models of this subject created since the first in 1988. As more and more evidence came to light with the continuing research into the original detailing of the car, so the eight models built have reflected the further known detail. In early 2000 Wingrove's further research unearthed a trove of original photos depicting the interior before it was changed. This information with particular attention to the detailing of the seats and dashboard was incorporated into this model, thus making it the closest to the original in colour and detailing as it is possible to get. For this reason it was built with the top folded down, better to see the interior, all of the other models of this car have the top up. Two models were created, the second is in the Gerald and Phyllis Wingrove personal collection, and can be seen on his website together with two of the original photos and further details at: http://www.wworkshop.net/Bugatti/Gallery-9.html The model is built to a scale of 1/15th with full engine and chassis detail, the plans drafted from data collected from the actual car and extensive archive data collected over more than 30 years. It has opening bonnet and side doors, with working door catches, hand built in metal throughout apart from the seats, and tyres (moulded in resin and silicone rubber), and fine leather for the trunk. Bonhams is grateful to Gerald Wingrove for supplying further provenance to this Lot.
