1911 Buick Model 21 Tourer Project
1911 Buick Model 21 Tourer Project
Buick is one of the American auto industry's great success stories, though not so much for its namesake. Buick rose to be one of America's best selling car companies through solid design, innovation and a healthy dose of salesmanship. From day one, it built the valve in head engines which were quite unusual for the time. With the exception of these innovative engines the rest of the car was quite standard fair for the day. With two-speed planetary transmissions and single chain drive this was the typical layout for a two-cylinder car. The real meteoric rise of Buick is more attributable to Billy Durant and his gift for sales. Unfortunately for David Buick he was driven out of the company in 1908. He dabbled with a couple other car ventures but ended up dying impoverished in 1929 after watching his namesake company rise to the top five of American production.
An improved four-cylinder valve in head car was introduced in 1908 and it quickly became a best seller. The Model Ten would prove a strong competitor to the Ford Model 'T': tough, more expensive, and feature packed. The new car featured a three speed sliding gear transmission replacing the earlier planetary.
For 1911, the Model 21 was introduced and featured a very pleasing angular touring car body. The power was by the larger 255ci four-cylinder motor and made for a nicer performing, smaller model. The car rode on a 110" wheelbase chassis with 34" x 4" wheels.
This Model 21 has been subject to a thorough but not yet complete restoration. A considerable amount of high quality work has been done and it is well on its way to be a fine automobile. The car will be offered as a fully restored rolling chassis with a restored and painted body. A freshly rebuilt radiator and hood are included as are original rear fenders. The front fenders are not with the car and the engine is included though has not been restored. The frame and wheels have been finished in correct straw yellow and the body in proper dark green as specified by Buick. Most of the costly and difficult work has been performed on this Buick and should be simple and enjoyable for the new owner to complete.
A careful inspection of the car is recommended as work will be performed on the car up until the time of the sale to get it as complete as possible. These are great looking and driving brass era automobiles and this one should be an excellent example when completed. Offered on a Bill of Sale.
