1911 Buick Model 39 Five Passenger Touring
Engine no. 824

Buick's advanced four-cylinder models were first introduced in 1907. The "valve in head" design was, of course, incorporated into the new four-cylinder engine. This feature made them unusual in the American market and did help boost performance. These stout strong running engines were continually enlarged and went from their original 30hp configuration to make nearly 50 in the largest model for 1911. The Buick Fours were a great sales success for Buick, giving them a solid competitor for the Model T with the $900 Model 10 (for 1911 now the Model 33) as well as offering a host of bigger, more powerful models. The Model 39 for 1911 was the top open car offering from Buick and carried a price tag more than three times that of the entry level Buick. Buick wanted a stake of the upper middle priced market and was aggressive with this model offering details and features not seen at this price. By way of illustrating this point one need look no further than the incredible work in the upholstery which showed Buick's desire to stand out from the competition and prove it made a quality machine.

This very attractive Buick is one of just 905 Model 39s made. The car was an enlarged version of the venerable Four mounted on a 117" chassis. A good size car, it rides on 28" wooden artillery wheels with 36x4 tires—the big wheels give the car a great look while the sleek torpedo coachwork was quite advanced for its day. The interior of this Buick is fantastic; the original and very ornate interior is beautifully preserved and has all the exquisite details that are often lost in restoration. The floorboards are original and complete with dealer's tag and early registration tag, both from Utah. The detail work in this car is really exceptional and gives it a grand and high quality appearance.

These are known to be good performers, owing to the engine putting out nearly 50hp and it being relatively lightweight. The beautiful presentation of this car would make it a worthy addition to any collection of fine automobiles.
