In 1933 Cadillac introduced a dramatically styled new line of cars. The appearance of these new models was entirely revamped and streamlined. The fenders received skirts to better contain the new smaller wheels. The grille shell was vee'd and rounded into the body and the radiator cap was now under the hood for the first time. Headlights were smaller and more "bullet" shaped. The new bumpers were sectioned with plain sides and three bars in the middle. All these new elements were used in conjunction with the existing and attractive new bodies introduced in 1932. The new styling would again predict the direction of the industry. This was seen as a bold step for the country's highest volume luxury car manufacturer.
Most of the changes for 1933 were cosmetic ones. The excellent chassis of its predecessor was little altered but the car did receive power servo brake booster. The V8 was the same displacement but changes had put its power at 115hp up from its original 85hp, and it now ran through the smooth shifting synchro-mesh transmission. Despite the terrible selling environment of the depression Cadillac continued to offer an extensive array of body styles and two-wheelbase lengths for the 355-C. The offering included 17 different custom Fleetwood bodies.
This 1933 355-C has handsome five passenger sedan coachwork. The car is an incredibly well-preserved original car; it appears to have had no restoration works and yet looks very good. The original paint is polished through in a few spots but still maintains a good shine, and the interior has survived amazingly well aside from a few minor stains. The car has nice ornate woodwork in the passenger compartment and an exquisite dashboard. Under the hood the engine compartment is original and fairly tidy. The cylinder heads are marked in chalk with the results of a recent compression test which all seem quite consistent between 43 and 50.
This 1933 Cadillac is an appealing "use it just the way it is" car. It would likely be a welcome entry in the preservation class at concours events as its originality is superb. These Cadillacs mark an interesting transition period between the "high classic" and the streamlined era of the company. Like many of the cars in the Short Collection they have seen little use in the last decade and bit of maintenance should be expected.
