Although best known for racing and its legendary Bearcat model, the Stutz line also produced some sporty touring cars such as the Bulldog Tourer. The Bulldog was the practical cousin to the Bearcat; both cars were mechanically identical to each other. However, the Bulldog was built on a 10" longer wheelbase, and it gave away very little in terms of performance. The car's body was narrow and close coupled and by no means heavy. The practicality of the Bulldog has made them a favorite for touring as there is always plenty of room for luggage and guests.

This Bulldog is the oldest member of the Short Collection and very likely the machine that launched Don's love for Stutz. This remarkable survivor is in amazingly original condition, much of the interior and paintwork is original. The car has been used extensively by Don and Lynette over the last 60 years but has been well maintained thanks to Don's expertise for these cars.

This Bulldog is powered by the same dual-valve four as the Bearcat. The Tourer is even fitted with a full set of wire wheels – a rare feature on an American touring car of the era. The full vinyl top appears to be a nicely preserved original. The back of the car is finished of with a set of twin spares and the nicely patinated wood dash is equipped with a full complement of instruments.

The car's early history is not documented but there are wonderful black and white photos of the car parked on the street in the late 1930s complete with pinup girls painted on the doors in nose art fashion. The car looks as if nothing has changed since that time.

This is a wonderfully appealing example of a seldom seen model. Many of these tourers were converted into Bearcats and few remain today. Today this car survives as a benchmark example of authenticity. The look of the car is great with the handsome dark red that works nicely with the nickel bright work and the car has just enough patina to make it very appealing.

This is a highly recommended machine for any collector who appreciates originality and authenticity. Like many of the cars included in the Short Collection, this has seen little use in the last decade and a bit of maintenance should be expected prior to use.
