The 1970s and 1980s spawned a flock of classic replicas, or neo-classics as some call them. Built on then-current production chassis, they typically had fiberglass bodies styled to emulate the sportier classics of the 1930s. Some of these were mildly attractive, while others were simply grotesque. One of the few genuinely attractive classic replicas was the Phillips Berlina.

Built from the late-1970s to the mid-80s by the Phillips Motor Company of Pompano Beach, Florida, the Phillips Berlina was based on a third-generation Corvette chassis. Stretching it 22 inches, Phillips used the Corvette’s cockpit, dashboard, seats and T-top, and of course running gear.

Built on a 1981 Corvette chassis and adopting its VIN, this Phillips Berlina is in very good condition, having been driven slightly more than 60,000 miles. Reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz SSK, it is equipped with the L82 350 cubic inch V8 and automatic transmission, tan interior with beige seats and carpets. There is some soiling of the driver’s carpet, but otherwise the car is clean and bright, inside and out. It had a complete brake system overhaul in 2009.
For those who crave the grandeur of the 1930s, but prefer modern drivability, a classic replica can be a viable alternative. The Phillips Berlina is one of the finest.
