LOT 305
In the same ownership for more than 90 years 1900 De Dion Bouton 3 1/2hp Vis-a-vis Registration no. D 343 Engine no. 2027
Recently unearthed, according to its old buff log book this De Dion Bouton can be traced back within the current family's ownership to July 1921, and it is thought that extended to before the Great War. The owners believe it to have been the second car to have been registered in their village and its early single letter prefix Kent registration is certainly consistent with this.
Presumably already long out-dated by the time they acquired the car, out of convenience to the owner's grandfather he moved the starting handle mechanism to the frame and added a handbrake for greater leverage on the rear band brakes as evidenced from its configuration today.
Close inspection shows the vis-a-vis frame to be mostly complete with only one cross member and one frame joining bracket corroded through. It would appear to be of the second derivative of the model with contracting band brakes, the 3 1/2hp motor, and a small water pump. The steering column, differential cover, radiator, parts of the reverse gear mechanism and numerous pieces of iron work including arm rests for the body are all present. The engine has been rebuilt and has a repaired inlet valve seating. Its number, 2027, is consistent with the believed date of the car.
At last year's LBVCR auction Bonhams sold a similar project which was back on the road by the Spring, proving that these cars represent straightforward restorations owing to the wealth of knowledge and availability of replacement parts.
As well as being eligible for the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run in due course, it will also make a fine VCC Creepy Crawly or De Dion Bouton Club entry.
The registration number is D 373, not D 343 as catalogued.
