Footnotes

In 1962 Rolls-Royce's new V8 engine appeared in improved form in the Bentley S3 and Silver Cloud III, incorporating larger carburettors, a new distributor and raised compression ratio. Maximum power (traditionally undisclosed, as ever) went up by approximately 7%, which translated into a top speed of 115mph and a 0-60mph time a fraction under 11 seconds. There were many other changes made to the S3/Cloud III, the most obvious being the adoption of a four-headlamp lighting arrangement, the absence of sidelights from the wing tops, and a bonnet that sloped down to a slightly lower radiator shell. The result of these styling revisions was a car generally regarded as the most handsome of all the 'standard steel' types. Inside, the new models featured revised accommodation with separate front seats and increased room for rear passengers. The last mainstream Bentley to employ a separate chassis, the S3 remained in production until superseded by the unitary construction T-Series in late 1965.
This particular S3 is offered from the collection of the late Barry Burnett, who commenced its restoration six years ago. Stripped back to bare metal, the body has been restored by Peter Claridge Restorations, of Bristol and requires repainting, while other tasks as yet unfinished include reinstallation of the complete interior and mechanical re-commissioning. Offered for completion and sold strictly as viewed, the car comes with old-style logbook and Swansea V5 and is offered without reserve.
