Introduced in 1961, the “fantail” (heckflosse in German) Mercedes were mid-size four-cylinder sedans. Successors to the W120 and W121 “Ponton” cars of the 1950s, they comprised the bread-and-butter segment of the line. Initially built in 1.9 liter form, they were designated W110 and were available with gasoline or diesel power. A July 1965 update brought a larger, 1,988 cc version of the sohc four, also available as a diesel, and nomenclature was revised accordingly to from “190” to “200.” The gas engine developed 105 bhp with twin Solex carburetors. A four-speed manual transmission was standard, with automatic available as an option.
Subtle trim changes accompanied the larger engine, and there were also interior upgrades like adjustable front backrests. At the same time, a 2,308 cc six was made available, cataloged as the 230, but sales were quite modest. The best sellers of the W110 range were the 190 and 200 diesels, with about 60 percent of production.
The W110 cars were replaced by the W114 and W115 “New Generation” in 1968. Although not designated as such, this range of cars made up what is now called the E-Class, an executive segment. In their homeland they were the mainstay of taxi fleets, sturdy and utilitarian, but also capable of spirited motoring and excellent handling when called upon by an eager driver.
A virtually new car, this Mercedes 200 has covered but 4,733 miles. It has had but two owners from new, and has been carefully maintained, never restored. The original Graphite Grey paint is in excellent condition, as is the red MB-Tex vinyl interior.
It comes with its original owner’s wallet and manual, and factory tool kit. It is currently registered in New Jersey and has a clear and assignable title. A First Place award winner at the Mercedes-Benz Club of America’s annual June Jamboree in Montvale, New Jersey, it represents a chance to buy a nearly new 42-year-old Mercedes.
